What is RoRo Shipping?

RoRo shipping, or Roll-on/Roll-off shipping, is a specialised method of transporting wheeled cargo. This means vehicles and machinery can be driven on and off the ship, rather than being lifted by cranes. This method is especially useful for items that exceed standard container dimensions, making it a practical solution for transporting large and heavy rolling cargo. Special RORO ships are designed to carry wheeled cargo, which can be driven, on and off the ship on their own wheels. These large ocean-going vessels have ramps at the bow and stern for quick loading.

How Much Does RoRo Shipping Cost?

RORO freight charges are calculated based on the number of cubic metres or the weight of the cargo, depending on which is the greatest. This means that if your cargo is bulky but relatively light, the cubic meter measurement will be used to determine the cost. Conversely, if your cargo is compact but very heavy, the weight will be the determining factor.

To provide an accurate quote and ensure your shipment is processed correctly, it is absolutely essential to provide precise dimensions (length, width, and height) and weight of your cargo. Any discrepancies can lead to unexpected charges or delays.

It’s important to book well in advance for RORO shipping as spaces are limited, especially on high demand routes, and at times can be pre-booked two or three months in advance.
