Roll On Roll Off: RoRo Shipping

Through a series of international partnerships N-Haulix Logistics has access to professional and reliable freight forwarding and customs brokerage resources globally.

freight items

The terms oversize or over dimensional cargo are used to describe freight items that won’t fit into a standard 20 or 40 foot sea freight containers and alternative solutions need to be found to pack and ship these items. If rolling can move these over dimensional items, then a roll on/roll off (RORO) freight solution may be an option. Clarke specialises in providing efficient and cost-effective RoRo shipping solutions for your oversized cargo.

What is RoRo Shipping?

RoRo shipping, or Roll-on/Roll-off shipping, is a specialised method of transporting wheeled cargo. This means vehicles and machinery can be driven on and off the ship, rather than being lifted by cranes. This method is especially useful for items that exceed standard container dimensions, making it a practical solution for transporting large and heavy rolling cargo. Special RORO ships are designed to carry wheeled cargo, which can be driven, on and off the ship on their own wheels. These large ocean-going vessels have ramps at the bow and stern for quick loading.

Why RoRo Shipping?

Often vehicles and machinery, such as cars, trucks, heavy construction, mining and earth moving machinery are transported internationally by Roll On Roll Off Shipping. This type of shipment usually has the advantage of being more cost effective than disassembling, packing, shipping, unpacking and re-assembling oversize or overweight cargo.

Is RoRo Shipping Safe?

While no shipping method is entirely without risk, RoRo shipping has a strong track record of safely transporting vehicles and machinery.

RoRo ships are specifically designed to carry wheeled cargo. They are equipped with advanced securing systems to prevent movement during transit, minimising the risk of damage.  Port personnel and ship crews are experienced in handling vehicles and machinery. They understand the importance of proper loading and securing procedures.

However, it is always advisable to obtain appropriate marine insurance to protect your cargo against unforeseen events.

Our RoRo Services

We handle a wide range of RoRo shipments, including:

  • Vehicles: Cars, trucks, buses, and other motorized vehicles.
  • Heavy Machinery: Construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and mining equipment.
  • Other Rolling Cargo: Trailers, and other wheeled or tracked vehicles.

How Much Does RoRo Shipping Cost?

RORO freight charges are calculated based on the number of cubic metres or the weight of the cargo, depending on which is the greatest. This means that if your cargo is bulky but relatively light, the cubic meter measurement will be used to determine the cost. Conversely, if your cargo is compact but very heavy, the weight will be the determining factor.

To provide an accurate quote and ensure your shipment is processed correctly, it is absolutely essential to provide precise dimensions (length, width, and height) and weight of your cargo. Any discrepancies can lead to unexpected charges or delays.

It’s important to book well in advance for RORO shipping as spaces are limited, especially on high demand routes, and at times can be pre-booked two or three months in advance. For example, there can be long waits for shipping vehicles from vehicle manufacturing nations such as Japan during December and January as New Year models come off production lines.

Frequently asked questions

Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) shipping is a method of transporting cargo, typically vehicles and heavy machinery, by rolling them onto and off of specialised ships. These vessels are designed with ramps, allowing vehicles to be driven directly onto the ship’s deck for transport.

While both RoRo (Roll-On/Roll-Off) and RoPax (Roll-On/Passenger) ships allow for vehicles to be loaded and unloaded by rolling on and off, the key difference lies in the additional capability of RoPax ships to carry passengers. RoPax vessels are equipped with facilities for passengers, making them suitable for combined cargo and passenger transport.

Generally, RoRo ships are designed primarily for cargo transport, such as vehicles and heavy machinery. However, some RoRo vessels may have limited accommodations for essential crew members. If passenger transport is a requirement, RoPax ships, which are designed for both cargo and passengers, would be more suitable.

RoRo shipping is best suited for the transportation of wheeled cargo, such as cars, trucks, buses, trailers, and heavy construction equipment. It provides a convenient and efficient way to move these types of vehicles and machinery between ports.

The cost-effectiveness of RoRo versus container shipping depends on the specific cargo and transportation needs. RoRo shipping is often more cost-effective for the transport of large, wheeled cargo, while container shipping may be more suitable for smaller, non-wheeled items. The choice between the two also depends on factors such as destination, transit time, and cargo handling requirements.

Some advantages of RoRo shipping include:

  • Efficiency: RoRo vessels allow for quick and easy loading and unloading of vehicles, reducing turnaround times.
  • Cost-effectiveness: For certain types of cargo, RoRo can be more cost-effective than other shipping methods.
  • Accessibility: RoRo ports are often equipped with ramps and facilities for easy access, making them suitable for a variety of wheeled cargo.
  • Flexibility: RoRo ships can accommodate a range of vehicles, from cars to large construction equipment, providing flexibility for different cargo types.
